The Lee Dam Center for Fine Art will showcase the photography of Kansas photographer WenDee Rowe during September in an exhibition titled “From the Seat of a Bike.”

For Rowe, a bicycle has never simply been a way to travel. It has been a way to experience Kansas. Nearly every photograph in the exhibit was captured while riding the scenic gravel roads and backroads of the state, offering viewers a perspective that can only be found by slowing down and taking in the landscape one mile at a time.

Rowe’s love of bicycling began while growing up on her family’s farm near Tribune in western Kansas. As a child, she pedaled along K-96 into town for summer jobs, afternoons at the swimming pool and visits to her grandmother’s house. That passion continued through moves to California and eventually back to Kansas, where she frequently biked to work and later discovered a love for gravel cycling.

Since 2006, Rowe has been part of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, serving as project manager and leading communications and promotion for the Kansas Sampler Festival and the Big Kansas Road Trip Pop-Ups. She is also co-author of “Kansas Guidebook 2 for Explorers” and traveled with Marci Penner to every incorporated city in Kansas while researching the guide. As she approaches retirement, Rowe has been helping update the new online Kansas Guidebook, which debuted in spring 2026.

Today, Rowe lives near Inman, where she continues to explore Kansas by bicycle, camera in hand. “From the Seat of a Bike” celebrates the beauty, character and unexpected moments found along Kansas roads that many travelers pass by.
