Joe Oswalt Retrospective

joe duck
For the first time, a special collection of works by acclaimed artist, sculptor and restoration artist Joe Oswalt will be displayed at the Lee Dam Center for Fine Art.
Oswalt’s paintings are familiar to many throughout northeast Kansas. His landscapes, rural scenes, Native American portraits and carvings captured the beauty, character and people of the region. His artwork can be found in homes, businesses, schools and public spaces across the area.
A graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Oswalt earned statewide recognition for his restoration of the historic artwork inside St. Mary’s Catholic Church at St. Benedict, a project that later contributed to the church being named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Art. He was also recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for his work as a restoration artist.
Although Oswalt spent the later years of his life in El Paso, Texas, he never lost his connection to northeast Kansas. This exhibit fulfills a wish he had shared before his death in 2017—to display his work in Marysville.
The exhibit features artwork generously loaned by area residents, friends and the Onaga Historical Museum, offering a rare opportunity to see a broad collection of Oswalt’s paintings and carvings in one place.
Exhibit Hours:
• Sundays: Noon-3 p.m.
• Mondays: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Wednesdays: 4-6 p.m.
This is a rare chance to see Joe Oswalt’s work gathered in one place and to celebrate an artist whose talent, craftsmanship and love of this region left a lasting mark.
