Marysville gets the Chardon Polka Band back for a full night of music, laughs and dancing on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Venue 36, 1195 Pony Express Highway.
Described as “polka with an attitude,” the Chardon Polka Band takes classic polkas and turns them into a fast-moving show with humor, variety and plenty of crowd energy. One minute it feels like a nod to “The Lawrence Welk Show,” and the next it swings into punk-rock twists, oddball participation songs and polka-rock covers that can jump from Twisted Sister to Queen to Lady Gaga.
Doors open ahead of the evening’s dance lesson at 6 p.m. The concert and dance begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. A cash bar will be available.
The Ohio-based band began in 2003 after founder Jake Kouwe was told there was no place for an accordion in his high school marching band. Kouwe recruited other teenagers, started playing in nursing homes and grew the group into a touring act with a loyal following across ages. Kouwe leads on accordion and vocals alongside Mike Franklin on banjo and guitar, Bob Young on drums, Mitch Lawrence on woodwinds and Brian Brazier on tuba.
The Chardon Polka Band’s Marysville performance is sponsored by the Marshall County Arts Cooperative.
